Position Overview

A respected, QOPI-Certified community-based hematology/oncology practice in Champaign is seeking an experienced Oncology Clinical Pharmacist ready to take full operational ownership and serve as a key clinical and strategic leader within the organization.

This is a rare opportunity to serve as the sole clinical pharmacist for a busy infusion center — with autonomy to lead compounding services, drive Epic Beacon EMR strategy, collaborate directly with physicians, and shape pharmacy operations from day one. If you are operationally self-sufficient and looking for a high-impact role with strong work-life balance, this is it.

What You'll Do

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Proactively review chemotherapy orders for accuracy, appropriateness, and dose calculations; provide direct feedback to prescribers as needed
  • Evaluate patient clinical data including laboratory results and vital signs to confirm treatment appropriateness
  • Verify that medication hold parameters have not been met and ensure safe, timely drug delivery
  • Assist with patient education on oral and intravenous chemotherapeutic agents
  • Optimize therapeutic strategies and biosimilar utilization within the practice
  • Maintain current, expert-level knowledge of hematology/oncology drugs and protocols

Pharmacy Operations

  • Lead all day-to-day operations of an in-office compounding service supporting a busy chemotherapy administration suite
  • Oversee all aspects of sterile compounding and hazardous drug handling in compliance with USP 797 and USP 800
  • Determine drug classification and risk levels to establish appropriate lifecycle workflows
  • Manage inventory ordering, receiving, documentation, and storage for both hazardous and non-hazardous drugs; proactively anticipate and mitigate supply chain disruptions and shortages
  • Ensure proper inventory turn and fiscal stewardship
  • Develop and maintain Compounding Service policies and standard operating procedures

Epic Beacon EMR

  • Build, validate, and maintain Epic Beacon treatment and supportive care plan libraries
  • Collaborate with physicians and clinical staff on planning and implementing patient treatment protocols within the EMR

Leadership & Team Development

  • Directly manage, mentor, and direct the workflow of pharmacy technicians
  • Oversee technician competency, work process adherence, and staff and patient safety
  • Maintain integrity and security of compounding areas and products produced
  • Collaborate with the Hematology-Oncology Clinical Manager on educational and operational needs of clinical staff
  • Partner with the Hem-Onc Department Chair and Clinical Director on strategic priorities and drug utilization optimization
  • Maintain awareness of patient assistance programs and collaborate with the cancer navigator to support patient enrollment

The Practice

This established hematology/oncology group is recognized for delivering high-quality, patient-centered cancer care in a collaborative community setting. The team fosters strong physician-pharmacist partnerships, long-term patient relationships, and a culture where clinical expertise is valued and respected.

Unlike larger health systems, decisions are made locally and collaboratively — giving pharmacy leadership a meaningful voice in patient care and operational strategy.

Required Qualifications

  • PharmD or equivalent pharmacy degree
  • Active Illinois Pharmacist License in good standing
  • Minimum 1 year of experience within a hazardous drug compounding service
  • Clinical pharmacy experience in hematology/oncology
  • Experience with chemotherapy protocols and order verification
  • Strong knowledge of USP 797 and USP 800 standards
  • CPR/BLS Certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Operationally self-sufficient and independent from day one

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years as a registered pharmacist within a hazardous drug compounding service
  • Management or supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated success establishing and maintaining systems and workflows for compounded sterile solutions (hazardous and non-hazardous)
  • Experience building Epic and/or Epic Beacon treatment and supportive care plans
  • Experience with Medically Integrated Dispensing (MID)
  • Experience with QOPI certification process and standards

Why This Opportunity?

  • Serve as the sole clinical pharmacist and pharmacy leader for a QOPI-Certified practice
  • Direct, meaningful collaboration with oncology physicians and clinical leadership
  • Full autonomy to build, optimize, and own pharmacy operations
  • Opportunity to manage and develop a dedicated pharmacy technician team
  • Competitive compensation: base salary + performance bonus + sign-on bonus + relocation assistance
  • Exceptional work-life balance — weekday-only schedule, no nights, no weekends, no on-call
